Milestone 5 > Scenarios > Rick Crawford

“Today’s such a full day!” Rick stretches himself and tries to pluck up his spirits. It’s 1:02 am and he has just finished his internship report that is due tomorrow. A new semester has just started and Rick is busy planning his course schedule and job interviews. “Since I’m going to graduate next year, I need to take the chance now to build up my professional skills.” Before hitting the books again, Rick decides to take a short break and checks CourseNav to see what’s new there.

Rick logs into CourseNav and as usual, he starts with searching by career. He selects “IT consultant” in the drop-down menu, then a list of recommended courses are shown in front of him. “Mmm…it seems I’m pretty much on track, most consulting people have taken BIT 512, BIT 513, and BIT 563 as I have. The little meter is awesome, telling me I have finished 70% of the courses which could secure me a job in a big IT consulting company.”

Before leaving this page, Rick glimpses at the “related careers” links on the upper right corner. He intuitively clicks “entrepreneur” out of his career interests and sees a list of recommended courses pop up. Scrolling down a bit, Rick notices one course named ES 715 is rated high and marked as “EVS”, which stands for Entrepreneur and Venture Club’s Recommendations. “I know many people in this club. Their recommendation is pretty trustworthy.” He goes to the ES 715 page and skims through the course description on the top, then goes down to see student comments about the course. “Ah…a lot of students think this course is a must-take at Ross, but it’s probably very demanding. Some students commented that the course requires so much time and efforts that they could only sleep for five hours a night.” Rick decides to add this course to his wish list. “That’s kinda scary! Let me sleep on it.”

Going back to the top of the page, Rick finds there are several tags on the right-hand side, such as “venture capital” and “case study.” He clicks on one of the tags and a whole page of text opens up. Rick is beginning to lose his patience because he becomes overwhelmed. “What on earth is this? I’m going to skip it.” He clicks the CourseNav icon on the upper left corner to go back to the main page. “That page reminds me of Wolverine Access, like a maze.” He yawns and checks the time on his laptop. “I’ve got to get back to work in five minutes”

Taking a sip of coffee, Rick ponders over what’s on his plate. He figures out that he needs a course about Chinese market that could help him get a head start on his career switch. “I want some hands-on experience so I can do business in that country” Thinking of this, Rick quickly goes back to the main page of CourseNav, types in “china” in the search box and picks the first entry in the “course” section on the search results page. “Ah….STY 582 Doing Business with China might be good for me. Its average rating is 4.8 and not much homework is required. That’s perfect for me! I have other heavy courses to deal with this semester.”

Down at the bottom of the page, Rick surprisingly finds a diagram there: a grey circle STY 503 and a red circle STY 510, each of them has a thick arrow directed to STY 582. Rolling the mouse over the arrows shows both STY 503 and STY 510 are the prerequisites of STY 582. “Umm…I’m done with STY 503 and that’s why it’s grey.” He adds STY 582 and STY 510 to his wish list. Time’s up. He logs out and dives back into his mountain of books.
